How is your natural gas usage calculated?
Not sure how your gas bill is worked out? We explain how it’s calculated below, so you can better understand how to read your next billing statement.
Firstly, the numbers are checked on your natural gas meter.
Your gas meter will display a line of digits representing your usage in cubic meters reading from left to right, which indicates the cumulative amount of gas consumed at the property.
Residential meters are typically read by ATCO (Network Operator) every three months, with your usage provided to Kleenheat for billing.
Gas usage calculation.
ATCO calculates the difference between your previous meter reading to obtain the gas consumption, which is then multiplied by the heating value* and then again by the pressure factor^ to understand your consumption, measured in megajoules. Heating values and pressure factors are not consistent across all customers.
For example; Usage during the period X heating value X pressure factor = total megajoules.
*The heating value is the number of megajoules released upon combustion when the gas is burnt and can vary between gas appliances used.
^Pressure factor: The pressure factor refers to your meter’s average temperature, pressure, and elevation.
*The heating value is the number of megajoules released upon combustion when the gas is burnt and can vary between gas appliances used.
^Pressure factor: The pressure factor refers to your meter’s average temperature, pressure, and elevation.
The total megajoules are then divided by 3.6 to determine your energy units. One energy unit is equivalent to 1 kilowatt of energy used.
Gas calculation on your bill.
If you refer to your latest bill, you will see the calculation displayed below:
Sum: (This Read – Last Read) x Heating Value x Pressure factor / 3.6 = Total Energy Units
